August 16 – Fundraising Banquet and Auction

Category : News

We invite you to a fundraising banquet and auction on August 16, 2014 at the Tee Box restaurant, located at the Comox Golf Club.

The Mack Laing Heritage Society of the ComoxValley was established to save and preserve a heritage home sitting on an idyllic public property at the end of Baybrook Drive, Comox. Located on the K’ómoks Estuary facing the BeaufortRange, Baybrook is Mack Laing’s first house in Comox. The Society’s goals are both to fulfill Mack’s wishes “to create a natural history Museum (Interpretive Centre) in his home”, and equally important, to establish a focus for conservation tourism in the Comox Valley, to inform and educate young and old about the rich natural history of the Comox Valley, while promoting its stewardship and conservation in perpetuity.

Hamilton Mack Laing is without question, one of the best-known residents of the ComoxValley. The Comox Archives and Museum currently has a display of his life at Baybrook, built in 1922. The process of building his home is engagingly described in his manuscript ‘Baybrook: Life’s Best Adventure’.

This special event will be a combination dinner and silent/live auction, and will include over 65 items, some with historical significance. Works include framed prints by well-known naturalist and artist Allan Brooks, original art works by local artists, an autographed book by 2013 Nobel Prize winner Alice Munro, various gift baskets, certificates, a selection of historic books, and signed copies of editions by local authors. A list of the items will be posted August 1 and will be updated as new items are secured.

The evening will feature a gourmet meal by Chef Adrian, with a choice of fish, chicken or vegetarian. (The specifics of the three choices are listed below.)  A selection of wines donated by 40 Knots Winery, are available for purchase by the glass. Cheese compliments of Natural Pastures Cheese will be available while you view the auction items. Doors will open at 6:15 PM.

Everyone will enjoy a sumptuous meal and the opportunity to bid on valuable and historic items. Throughout the evening, the participants of the event will enjoy selected literary readings from noted authors including Alice Munro who spent time and wrote while staying at Bay brook. Tickets are $45.00 per person and will be available in Blue Heron Books, Comox; Laughing Oyster Bookshop, Courtenay; from society members or by email to home@shaw.ca. Come join us, open your pocketbooks, find some new treasures, and help our Society preserve this ComoxValley heritage home.
