What would Mack Laing want?

I must say I’m not sure that Shirley McLoughlin’s prediction of what Mack Laing would want is entirely correct. For example, the suggestion that he would prefer to see his entire beautiful heritage home torn down and sent to the landfill rather than replacing a few rotten boards might not be accurate. Shirley also seems to be suggesting that he would prefer to see a new nature center built “in a central location easily accessible”. To me this sounds like somewhere away from nature, made accessible by paving over a large portion of nature for a parking lot, so that parents can easily drop off their children individually from motor vehicles, thus ensuring they don’t have to see or walk through any nature on the way to the nature center.  I’ve talked to several naturalists and hundreds of environmentalists. None of them have those sorts of visions.

Fortunately, we can take advantage of written language and carefully study exactly what Mack Laing wrote to determine if he was any different from environmentalists today, and whether he would prefer his house torn down, or, repaired and preserved by a society  to become a great asset to the Town of Comox and The Comox Valley at no cost to taxpayers. Hopefully The Town of Comox can also determine what the majority of people would like to see happen to his house and act accordingly.
