Baybrook house was “Life’s Best Adventure” for Mack Laing

Category : News

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the accomplishments of Hamilton Mack Laing could be celebrated in the Comox home he describes as “life’s best adventure”!

Laing was a recognized and respected naturalist, nationally and internationally, as well as a pioneer, historian, orchardist, photographer and lover of nature.

The Mack Laing Heritage Society of the Comox Valley (MLHS) is dedicated to preserving his legacy and his considerable contribution to our environmental heritage.

Baybrook, built by Mack Laing in 1923, was where he did most of his work and gained national renown. He wrote books and articles that are still relevant and highly-regarded today.

In late 2013, Comox Valley Nature and Project Watershed presented the Town of Comox with a proposal that would re-purpose Baybrook house into a public interpretive centre and nature house – at no cost to the taxpayer.

In 1981, Mack Laing’s Will expressed his wish for a natural history museum to be made from his home. The MLHS believes the time has come and that Baybrook would fulfill his dream.

“Mack wanted to educate and encourage people to live in harmony with the natural environment,” remembers Alice Bullen, a Comox councillor appointed to “look after” the elderly Laing’s interests.

The Society, a registered non-profit, will raise money to pay for the property taxes, expenses, amenities, and repairs to Baybrook.

The MLHS and the Town of Comox will ensure the house remains a public treasure, in harmony with its beautiful location.

The Mack Laing Society celebrates the rich natural history of the Comox Valley through the person of one of its most renowned naturalists – Hamilton Mack Laing.
