Comox decision to destroy history is unreasonable

The Mack Laing Heritage Society regrets that some individuals feel obliged to continue a battle against two homes already slated for demolition by the Town of Comox.

Whatever their reasoning, in the process they are denying the environmental and scientific legacy of Hamilton Mack Laing to Canadians. The destruction of his homes is only one aspect of this disrespect. The Town of Comox, demonstrably over many decades, cares nothing for history, or the legacy Mack Laing deeded it.

The nature house proposed by the MLHS would have been modest, educational in purpose, self-supporting, AND pay taxes to the Town of Comox. It would have also offered a level of security to this unique municipal park.

Those are the facts. Opponents, however, are entirely obsessed with comparing the MLHS proposal to a far different and much more ambitious project – one unsuitable for the Baybrook location.

Not one valid argument against either the historical importance of Baybrook and Shakesides, or indeed Mack Laing himself, has been forthcoming. Instead, opponents malign the hard-working members of a public, non-profit, benevolent organization and its partners, while diligently hiding their own connections and alliances from public scrutiny.

By their actions, the detractors would deny the benefit to Comox of both a nature house and a historic figure worthy of respect.

Their motives are not in doubt, and their reasons theirs alone. Neither reflect those of other Comox citizens, or indeed Canadians.
